A specialty of West Bengal, Kantha technique typically uses the classic running stitch to create a simple yet eye-catching design. Today, this 500-year-old craft has gained a new dimension after finding its place in home furnishings. In many Indonesian languages, Ikat means to 'tie' or 'bind.'
This technique is more complex than traditional tie-and-dye because it employs ‘resist dyeing’ the yarns prior to the weaving process. Individual yarns or bundles of yarns are tightly wrapped together to obtain the desired patterns. The bindings can be altered to create an alternate new pattern. The 'blurriness' in the design, lends a unique aesthetic to ikat.
This product has been handmade by artisans, hence minor variations in color, pattern and texture should not be perceived as defects. These attributes lend authenticity, character and exclusivity to your purchase, making it one-of-a-kind.
